FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long does the publishing process take?
We strive to complete the publishing process in six to eight months, with authors typically seeing their book available on major print and online distribution channels within eight months.
What’s the difference between self-publishing, traditional publishing, and hybrid publishing?
Self-publishing:
- Self-publishing refers to the process where an author takes on the responsibility of publishing their work independently, without the involvement of traditional publishing houses.
- In self-publishing, the author typically handles tasks such as editing, formatting, cover design, and marketing on their own or hires professionals for these services. The author also chooses the distribution channels for their book, such as online retailers or local bookstores.
- Authors have complete control over their work, retain a higher percentage of royalties, and can publish more quickly.
- Authors bear the entire cost and responsibility for the publishing process, and it can be challenging to gain visibility without the support of traditional publishing networks.
Traditional publishing:
- Traditional publishers typically provide professional editing services and have well-developed distribution networks, making getting books into bookstores and libraries easier and reaching a wider audience.
- Traditional publishers often have dedicated marketing teams to promote books, including arranging book tours, sending review copies to influencers, and utilizing other promotional strategies.
- Being published by a reputable traditional publishing house can enhance an author’s credibility and prestige, as these publishers are often associated with quality literature.
- Traditional publishers typically provide advances to authors, offering financial support upfront, even before the book is released.
- Authors have less control over the publishing process, including cover design, release dates, and marketing strategies.
- The process can be lengthy, often taking a year or more from manuscript submission to book release.
- Securing a literary scout can be challenging, and many books are not accepted.
Hybrid publishing:
- Hybrid publishing combines elements of traditional and self-publishing. It involves a partnership between the author and a publishing company, where the author contributes financially to the publication process but also benefits from some traditional publishing services.
While authors contribute financially to the publishing costs, they may receive higher royalty rates compared to traditional publishing. This could lead to a more significant financial return per book sold. - Hybrid publishers often provide professional editing, cover design, and marketing services, similar to traditional publishers. Authors can benefit from the expertise of industry professionals.
Authors in hybrid publishing often have more control over the editorial and design processes, ensuring that the final product meets their vision and standards. - Hybrid publishing can offer a quicker route to publication compared to traditional publishing, which often involves a longer timeline. Authors may have more flexibility in setting release dates.
- Authors in hybrid publishing may retain more rights to their work, allowing them to explore additional opportunities, such as selling foreign rights or adapting the work into different media.
How do I choose a hybrid publishing company?
Research and Compare:
- Start by researching various hybrid publishers. Look for companies with a good reputation and a track record of successful book releases.
- Compare the services offered by different hybrid publishers. Consider aspects such as editing, cover design, distribution channels, and marketing support.
Reviews and Testimonials:
- Read reviews and testimonials from authors who have used the services of the hybrid publishing company. This can provide insights into the experiences of other writers and the quality of services offered.
Transparency and Contracts:
- Ensure that the hybrid publisher is transparent about their processes, costs, and timelines. Review their contract carefully and understand the terms and conditions before committing.
- Be wary of companies that ask for excessive fees upfront or have unclear pricing structures.
Distribution Channels:
- Check which distribution channels the hybrid publisher uses to make your book available to readers. A wider distribution network increases the chances of reaching a broader audience.
Rights and Royalties:
- Understand the rights you retain as an author. Some hybrid publishers may take a percentage of royalties, while others may have different arrangements. Ensure that the terms are fair and align with your expectations.
Author Support:
- Evaluate the level of support the hybrid publisher provides to authors. This can include marketing assistance, guidance on book promotion, and ongoing support after the book is published.
Portfolio of Published Books:
- Look at the books previously published by the hybrid publisher. This can give you an idea of the quality of their work and the types of genres they specialize in.
Industry Reputation:
- Check the overall reputation of the hybrid publisher within the publishing industry. Reputable companies are more likely to have established connections with book distributors and retailers.
Submission Process:
- Understand the submission process of the hybrid publisher. Some may have a selective process for accepting manuscripts, while others may be more open. Be prepared to submit a polished manuscript for consideration.
Legal and Professional Advice:
- If needed, consult with a literary scout, lawyer, or other publishing professionals before signing any contracts. They can provide valuable insights and ensure that you make informed decisions.
- Remember that choosing a hybrid publishing company is a personal decision, and what works for one author may not work for another. Take your time, ask questions, and make sure the publisher aligns with your publishing goals and values.
How much will I earn per book?
The royalty rate for each book sold varies depending on the format and is influenced by paper and printing costs. For a detailed insight into the royalty rates concerning paperbacks, hardcovers, eBooks, and audiobooks, it is advised to consult with your Literary Scout or Publication Advisor. It is important to understand that initially, you will receive the full profit from each sale until you have recovered your entire publishing investment. Beyond that point, a royalty fee of only 20 cents per book sold will be retained.
How often are sales reported?
Royalties are calculated on a calendar quarter basis and will be paid in United States Dollars (USD) within ninety (90) days after the end of each calendar quarter. The timing of actual receipt of the payment by the author may occur after these issuance dates. Royalties will be paid via checks. A valid and IRS-verified TIN must be provided before we can legally remit royalty proceeds to you.
Which retailers will carry my book?
We collaborate with Ingram, the world’s largest book distributor. Because of this, your book is made available to many retailers, from big names like Barnes & Noble and Amazon to small mom-and-pop bookstores. In addition to making the physical book available at the retail level, we also make the eBook available on Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble NOOK, and Apple Books. Lastly, audiobooks are featured on the most popular platforms, including Amazon’s Audible and Apple.
